Relief Society Birthday Dinner and Green Party

March is the month I put on two parties, one at the church for the Relief Society Birthday Dinner and one at home for our annual St. Patrick's day "Green Party."

The theme for this year's RS activity was "What's Your Story?" and we focused on family history.
I recently bought a spring-y looking tablecloth with yellow and pink flowers, and decided to pull my color scheme for the dinner from it. I found some pretty clipart online to use for the invitation.
This picture is mostly to show the tablecloth.
I used my wooden paint sticks to create a white picket fence. I had help with painting them white, and Kent put them together for me. I think they turned out very cute, and made pink and yellow tissue paper flowers along the bottom. The lights on both sides of the room  had tufts of yellow, pink and white tulle between the bulbs.
I used pictures I had of my ancestors on the walls in between the fences, and on the tables near the centerpieces.  Others also brought photos to put on the tables.
On the tables I used the matching cloth napkins as fabric under the silk flower centerpieces. A friend in the ward made the centerpieces for me using flowers I'd given her. Some of the flowers were ones I had from Adri's wedding ten years ago, so I was happy to repurpose them!
I used my milk bottles again, with a yellow and pink them. That's tulle ribbon wrapped around them, with small, individually made organza flowers on each one. We had pink and regular lemonade, as well as pink and yellow paper straws.
I found pretty floral napkins at Party City that matched the theme. The little books were given to the sisters to start writing their personal histories.
For our program we had the Primary activity girls sing "Family History, I am Doing It", and then had a few sisters from the ward share stories of their ancestors.
I wish this photo also had the yellow plates we also used, as well as the pink ones, but I guess I should be happy I have a picture of the food at all! The menu was chicken pasta salad, creamy strawberry jello, spinach salad, homemade dinner rolls and cupcakes.

I made the cupcakes and found yellow, white and pink polka dot cupcake liners to match the color scheme. The yellow cupcakes were lemon flavored, the white were coconut, and the pink were cherry chip. All with buttercream frostings of the same flavors.

I didn't get as many close ups of all the fun details of the decorations since never have enough help with set up, and consequently I run out of time to take pictures.
We had a very good turn out, with almost not enough place settings (I set up for forty, which has been plenty in the past).  I think it's because the activity was on an evening of a snow day with no school, and the sisters were anxious to get out of the house!

Now on to the next party--

This year I had enough of the "GREEN" words cut out from previous years' invitations that I didn't have to make any new ones, I just printed the inside with this year's date on it.
One advantage of doing this every year is that I have all the supplies and don't vary too much.
This year's food wasn't as green as in previous years, but was still a good variety. I made the spinach crepes again this year, and a grasshopper pie.
Green mint M&M's are a staple menu item for the green party!!
This year I invited my Bible study friends. The Regers and Farrells weren't able to come, but we had fun with the Smiths, Propts and Mammarellas. Karen gave me a scarf to wear so we'd all have shamrock scarves for the photo. We had a great time!
Here we are playing the green Jeopardy game. This year we played men against the women.
One thing I did new this year was to put the questions into plastic pouches so it would be easier to switch out the questions and the amount of points they're worth, or to add a new question. That seems to happen almost every year, and now it will be easier to do it.
I gave out little treat bags to everyone as they left, but didn't get a picture of them. They were little green bags with green tissues, wintergreen lifesavers and Irish spring soap in them.

Disney World--Magic Kingdom

Our third and final day with the Stinsons in Florida was the Magic Kingdom. The original Disneyland theme park.

Weather was nice, even though we had to dodge a few rain storms.  Fortunately we could duck into rides and missed the worst of it.  We must have been pretty tired from all the fun because we didn't seem to have many pictures of this last day. I know we went on the Small World ride, and I think it was Winny the Poo ride that we went on twice.  I must admit that after the amazing rides and sights we had seen the first couple of days with Harry Potter and Avatar Magic Kingdom did not have near the appeal.  It is more for children. That is not to say it was not amazing in its own way.  I still love the decorative castles, fantasy-land type buildings and fake rocks that look so amazingly real they are amazing.  I found myself feeling a little like my life had less meaning because I have never worked as an "Imagineer" at Disney-land. I think I would have loved that. But I can still enjoy the Magic Disney has created.

Of course the refreshments were great as always - and a GREAT price too!
I got my customary Ice Cream that I always like to have when traveling.
Flying Dumbo was one of the few pictures we took on rides.

Of course the classic "Disney Castle" was amazing.

Very decorative murals and stained glass on the inside. Lovely

And of course the classic
photos of the castle to prove we were really there!

It was an amazing, whirlwind of a three day vacation with the Stinson Family.  It was fun as always to spend time with them.  It is a blessing to be able to see the Disney Magic through the eyes of children.  The world is a much more magical place to them, and that magic is contagious when we can share adventures like this with them.  I hope we will be able to do this with all of our grandchildren some day.  Not all at the same time but with each family as their children get to be at that magical age that makes them so enjoyable.

Disney World--Animal Kingdom

The second day of our time in Disney World was spent at Animal Kingdom. For some reason I didn't get a picture of a sign saying "Animal Kingdom."

The biggest draw at Animal Kingdom right now is the newest ride, which is "Flight of Passage" in "Pandora- the World of Avatar".
There was a long line, even though it was the first thing in the morning.
But we spent our time in line visiting with the Stinsons,
and looking at the amazing detail that was put into creating the world of Pandora. So the time passed pleasantly.
We saw this life-size avatar once we got inside when we were about to get onto the ride. It was INCREDIBLE! It was like flying around in front of an Imax Theater, and we thought it was worth the wait.
The other ride in the World of Pandora was called the Na'vi River Journey, which was a boat ride on a river in a darkened space with florescent glowing plants and unusual animals. It was pretty, but not one we necessarily wanted to ride again.
Next we went on the safari ride, where rode on a large jeep and saw many animals out in the wild.
We saw alligators,
giraffes,
and elephants, to name a few. It was supposed to make us feel like we were on a safari in Africa. After this ride we ate lunch in the Africa section. The line was long and the food wasn't very good, but at least it was also expensive!
This is the "Tree of Life" which is at the center of the Animal Kingdom Park.
If you looked up close you could see lots of animals carved into the trunk of the tree.
The Stinsons left and went back to their hotel, but Kent and I stayed late to see things lit up at night. I was told to watch the "Tree of Life" at night because at random times there would be light shows on the trunk. Kent and I saw a couple of them.
We also walked through "Pandora, World of Avatar", to see the flowers, trees and bushes light up.
Things definitely looked different and really pretty at night!
This is the same cluster of flowers as the picture above, as it got darker and darker.
We had the Disney World app and saw that the wait time for the "Flight of Passage" ride was only 45 minutes (a few times we checked and the wait was over 3 hours!) so Kent and I went on the ride again. It was by far my favorite ride we went on in any of the parks during the five days we were at Universal Studios and Disney World.
One reason Kent and I stayed late was to watch a newish show at the Animal Kingdom called "Rivers of Light."
It was a spectacular show, and unlike anything we'd seen before.
Flower and animal shapes came floating out on the water, with their colors always changing.
Then fountains started to come out of the flowers and to move with the music that was playing.
I hope this video works, because it was really cool they way they projected a movie onto the water sprays. (Be sure to enlarge it to full screen.)
I took this video during the grand finale.

At the end of the show everything floated back to the shore. It was a unique and fabulous show and I'm really glad we stayed to see it!
