On August 1st I flew to Montana to help Garrett and Krystal's family drive from Montana to their new assignment as an ROTC instructor at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
One last photo opportunity near the Malmstrom Air Force base sign. I helped Krystal drive the van while Garrett drove their car.
I like this picture of Adam because he has his teddy bear made by my mom, plus the Hungry caterpillar neck pillow that I gave him, to travel with him in the van.
Our first stop was about an hour away from the base was a Hutterite store, where we stopped to get some milkshakes and other snacks. Our next stop was at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, which is in the south central part of Montana.
This is the marker commemorating the site of the battle.
George Custer is buried here.
A wire sculpture in the park.
This picture of Alexa was taken in our hotel that night. I just had to put it in because she's wearing two of my bracelets and my watch. Wearing my jewelry was one of the ways I got her to warm up to me! She was 14 months old.
Our first stop the next day of our trip was at Devil's Tower National Monument in northern Wyoming.
It was a perfect day for pictures.the kids look none too impressed in this photo!. We just did a quick stop, since we were on our way to---
Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.
The state flags leading to the viewing platform at Mount Rushmore.
This was about the only picture on the whole trip where all seven us were together, so I'm glad we got it.
The next day of our trip, as we were driving along the freeway in South Dakota, I saw signs advertising the world's only Corn Palace.
The Corn Palace was one of the subjects of an AFN commercial we used to see when we lived in Germany, so I convinced Garrett and Krystal to stop and look around.
The inside and the outside of the building was decorated with mosaics made from different types of corn. We watched a video about how the corn palace came to be, and bought a few souvenirs.Apparently the decorations are changed every two years.
It sure is hard to get a picture of the four kids where one isn't making a face or turning away!
This little chair was in a gift shop of one of the rest areas we stopped along the way.
The kids actually weren't making faces when they posed for these pictures.
We drove right to the new home that Garrett and Krystal had bought off the internet without ever seeing it in person. It had a nice play set for the kids in the back yard.Their furniture wasn't going to arrive for a few days, but they'd talked to the Bishop of their new ward, and just hours after we arrived, people started coming over with furniture and air mattresses for them to borrow.
The guys checking out the softness of the carpet in the living room.
Outside their new home before church.
These are the only two pictures of us from the 90's that I could find.
We've kept in touch through the years sending Christmas cards, never suspecting that our paths would cross again!
