PERU--Part One--Nazca Lines and Ballestas Island Nature Preserve

In April Kent and I were able to cross another "Wonder of the World" off our bucket list of places to see, since we took a ten day tour to Peru over spring break!
Here we are in Atlanta before boarding the plane to Lima. Our flight was delayed by two hours, which meant we landed at 1am instead of 11pm. After going through customs and getting our luggage, we were met by our driver who took us to the hotel. We arrived there at 3am.
Our wake-up call was at 6am so we could board a tour bus to drive us to Pisco in the southern part of the country. It's the airport where the flights over the Nazca lines take off from.
We drove along the coast and saw lots of beaches on the Pacific Ocean.
Pelicans hanging out on the boats in Pisco.
The brand spanking new airport in Pisco.
It was the most empty airport I've ever seen, sort of like all the people were "raptured"!
After going through security Kent and I had the waiting area to ourselves.
The baggage carousel. This little airport must have big plans for the future!!
Boarding the small plane (twelve passengers) for our flight. Thankfully it was a beautiful, clear day with great visibility.
We sat near the front. Many people had warned us about getting air sick in the small plane, so we'd had a light breakfast.

We were up in the air for almost an hour. The pilot did a great job of flying over the designs on the ground. He'd fly so that people one side of the plane could see, then circle around so the other side could see.
The designs above were just lots of random straight lines and shapes.
The one on the hillside is called "the astronaut".
The monkey above isn't a very clear picture, but a cool design.
The one above is called "the hummingbird."
This is obviously a spider.
The one above also has a name, but I can't remember what it is. Kent and I were very fortunate that neither of us got airsick at all.
After our flight we went to the city of Pisco for lunch. It was Easter weekend, so it was a four-day holiday for the Peruvians and the beach was very crowded.
This was my lunch, which wasn't very appetizing, in my opinion. The pink stuff is a marinated fish dish called ceviche, which I tried because it's a Peruvian specialty.
We stayed at a very nice resort in Pisco, and this was the view from the balcony on our room.
The next morning we took a boat cruise out to an island nature preserve called Ballestas Island.
This photo gives an idea how small the boat was, which was a large motor boat.
This mark on the side of the hill is called the Paracas Candelbra. There are a few theories, but no one knows for sure how it got there or who created it. It's almost 600 feet high and can be seen from 12 miles out at sea.
We many varieties of birds on the island- which our tour guide pointed out to us- including penguins.

The rock formations and the color of the water was beautiful, too.
Besides birds there were LOTS of sea lions.
After the boat tour we got back into the bus on the mainland and went to a look out point over the Pacific Ocean. David and Tresha Andrews traveled with us to Peru, but this was one of the first photos of us all together.
Another view of the impressive shoreline.
I'm including this picture, even though it's small, because those are wild flamingos in the water. That was the end of our time in southern Peru, and we drove back to Lima that afternoon.
